Jessica D. Bortnick

Barrister & Solicitor

Certified Executor Advisor

Founder of Bortnick Law

My Story

After working as a journeyman welder for several years, I articled and subsequently worked at the Edmonton office of a large regional law firm. In 2013, I took over the practice of Hilary Tanasichuk, a retiring lawyer in Sherwood Park, and operated as an association for the practice of law with two other lawyers under the banner of "The Law House". In 2015, I moved my practice to the Windermere area of south Edmonton and owned and operated "Windermere Law Office".

In 2020, I co-founded Make Your Own Wills, a website that enables Canadians to create their own estate planning documents. In late 2022, I co-founded Next Step Executor Services, which is aimed at providing estate executors and administrators with a wide range of non-legal services to assist them with completing their duties in administering a deceased's loved one's estate.

I am a member of the Law Society of Alberta, the Cooperative Memorial Society and the Canadian Institute of Certified Executor Advisors. I am also one of only eight lawyers in Alberta that are members of the Estate Planning Council of Canada. My practice consists of a general solicitor's practice: dealing with non-litigious matters in the areas of Wills and Estate Planning, Probate and Estate Administration, Corporate, Commercial, Business and Real Estate law.

I am a resident of Westerose, Alberta, a mother of three children, an artist and a passionate homesteader.   I enjoy helping clients navigate through what may at times be a legal minefield.  I am a firm believer in client education having presented dozens of seminars on the legal aspects of Wills and Estates in and around the City of Edmonton, the Hamlet of Sherwood Park and the County of Lamont.
